Do Lash Techs Use Premade Fans? Honest Answers to the Questions Every Lash Artist Asks

Do Lash Techs Use Premade Fans? Honest Answers to the Questions Every Lash Artist Asks

Nov 1, 2026

Short answer? Yes. A lot of them.

Premade fans (you'll also hear promade fans, pre-fanned lashes, or ready-made fans) are one of the most used products in volume lashing today. Brand new artists use them. Salon owners booking back-to-back full sets use them. Artists with ten years of experience who can hand-fan in their sleep use them too.

But that one question usually comes with a dozen more behind it. Is it cheating? Will my clients know? Are they bad for natural lashes? Do they hurt retention? Should I learn handmade first?

We see these questions almost every day on social media and lash groups, so let's answer all of them in one place.

A quick note on who's talking. I'm Vi, co-founder of Mega Lash Academy. I'm not a lash artist. I'm the person on the other side of your DMs and support emails, and I run this business the same way you run yours: one client, one order, one late night at a time. Since 2021 we've supplied more than 20,000 lash artists worldwide, and what follows is what we've learned from all of you.

First, what exactly is a premade fan?

A premade fan is a volume fan that's already been fanned out and bonded at the base before it reaches you. Instead of picking up several loose lashes and fanning them with your tweezers during the appointment, you pick up a finished fan, dip in lash adhesive, and place it on client's lash.

A handmade fan is the opposite. You pull individual lashes from a strip and create each fan yourself, right there at the lash bed.

What about "promade"? Many brands, including us, use that word for premade fans made with more precision: thinner bases, more even spread, and more consistent fans from strip to strip. Same idea, higher standard.

Premade fans also come in different formats, and the format changes how they feel in your workflow:

  • Loose fans sit in a tray and you pick them up one at a time.
  • Strip or stacked fans come lined up on clear strips so you can peel and pick in a steady rhythm. Our Rapid Promade Fans® work this way, with 1,000 fans per tray in our core trays.
  • One-step pickup fans are built to come off the strip in a single motion: pick, dip, place. That's what our Velo Fans do, and they were the first of their kind in the USA.

So, do lash techs really use premade fans?

Yes, and for very practical reasons:

  • Speed. Fanning by hand takes time on every single fan. Premade fans let you put that time into isolation, placement, and mapping instead.
  • Consistency. Every fan in a quality tray looks like the one before it. That means a more even set, especially across a long appointment.
  • Your hands and wrists. Handmade volume asks a lot of your wrists, fingers, and shoulders, set after set. Premade fans take some of that repetitive strain off.
  • Growth. Shorter appointments can mean more clients per day, or the same number of clients and more breathing room. Both are good business.
  • Access. Newer artists can start offering volume and mega volume sooner while they keep building their hand-fanning skills.

And here's what surprises people: a lot of experienced artists use both. Premade fans for density and speed, handmade fans when they want a custom spread or a specific texture. It's not one camp or the other.

Is using premade fans "cheating"?

No.

Your client is paying for a result: lashes that look beautiful, feel light, and last until their fill. Clean isolation, smart mapping, correct placement, and good adhesive control are still 100% your skill. A premade fan doesn't do any of that for you.

Let's be frank about both sides, though. A well-made promade fan beats a clumpy handmade fan every time. But a cheap premade fan with a thick, glue-heavy base isn't better than a careful handmade one either. Quality is what matters, not the label.

How to tell a good premade fan from a bad one

Not all premade fans are made the same. Before you commit to a brand, look for:

  • A thin, narrow base. A thick or boxy base adds weight and can sit awkwardly on the natural lash.
  • An even, symmetrical spread. Lopsided fans make a set look patchy.
  • The right diameter for the dimension. Higher D fans should use finer lashes so the fan stays light.
  • Consistent length and curl. Every fan in a tray should match its label.
  • Clean release. Fans should come off the strip without pulling apart or dragging neighbors with them.
  • No visible glue clumps and no stray or broken lashes.

The easiest way to check all of this? Hold it in your tweezers. Our Sample Rapid Promade Fans let you try several styles before you buy a full tray.

Do premade fans damage natural lashes?

Damage comes from weight and application, not from the word "premade."

What protects your client's natural lashes:

  • Match the fan to the natural lash. Fine, short, or weak natural lashes need lighter fans: lower D, finer diameter, shorter length.
  • Watch the total weight. More lashes per fan means a finer diameter. That's why our 5D and 6D fans use 0.07, 8D uses 0.05, and 10D and up use 0.03.
  • Isolate every time. Stickies cause far more trouble than any fan style.
  • Place it right. Proper distance from the lid and full attachment along the natural lash keeps the fan secure and comfortable.

A light, well-made premade fan applied correctly is just as safe as a handmade one.

Do premade fans affect retention?

They can, and the base is usually the reason. A thin base gives you better contact with the natural lash. A thick, stiff base can lift or pop off early.

A few retention habits that make a real difference with premade fans:

  • Dip only the base into your adhesive, not half the fan.
  • Attach the fan along the natural lash instead of balancing it on the tip.
  • Keep an eye on your room's humidity and temperature, and choose an adhesive that fits your space and your speed.
  • Swap your glue drop often so you're always working with fresh adhesive.

If retention is giving you trouble, your adhesive is the next place to look. Browse our lash adhesives and liquid products to find a match for your environment.

Which D should you use? A quick guide

There's no one perfect number, but here's a general starting point:

  • 3D to 5D: Soft, natural volume. Great for hybrid-style looks and clients with finer lashes.
  • 6D: Everyday volume. The most universally stocked dimension in the industry for a reason.
  • 8D to 10D: Fuller, fluffier sets with noticeable density.
  • 12D to 14D: Full to dramatic, right at the edge of mega volume.
  • 16D to 20D: Mega volume for clients with strong, healthy natural lashes who want maximum impact.

Always let the natural lash decide. If the natural lashes can't comfortably hold the weight, go down a dimension or a length.

Which premade fan style fits your work?

This is where premade fans get fun. Different styles create different looks and fit different workflows.

Rapid Promade Fans®: The Everyday Workhorse

Velo Fans: One-Step Pickup

If speed is what you're chasing, start here. Velo Fans are designed for one smooth motion: pick, dip, place. No fiddling, no second grab. They were the first of their kind in the USA, and most trays hold 810 fans.

Camellia and Wispy Promade Fans: Texture Without the Extra Work

Most premade fans use the same length for every lash in the fan. Camellia fans don't. Each individual fan has three staggered lengths built in, which gives you a soft, textured, wispy finish without hand-building every spike. Each tray is one length, labeled with the longest lash in the fan so mapping stays simple. Our Wispy Rapid Promade Fans (5D, 7D, and 9D) live in the same collection for spikier, more textured sets.

Narrow Rapid Promade Fans: Dense and Uniform

Narrow fans have a tighter spread for a lush, dense, uniform look. A favorite for artists who want fullness with a clean, polished line.

Spikes: For Wet-Look and Wispy Sets

Closed fans that create defined spikes. Layer them into a volume set for that textured, editorial look clients keep saving on social media.

Loose Promade Fans: For Tray Pickers

If you prefer picking from a tray instead of a strip, loose fans give you premade speed with the pickup style you're used to.

Brown and Colored Promade Fans: Softer Looks and Statement Sets

Brown lashes have been in high demand for the last few years, especially for clients with lighter hair and brows who want a softer, more natural result. And for birthdays, festivals, and anyone who wants a pop of color, colored fans make it easy.

Prefer handmade? You deserve lashes that fan like a dream

Handmade fans are a beautiful skill, and plenty of artists simply love the craft. If that's you, the lash you fan with makes all the difference.

Our Cashmere lashes are soft, lightweight, and available from 0.02 up to 0.07, in single and mixed-length trays. Our Easy Fanning Cashmere lashes are made for quick, even fans with less pressure from your tweezers.

A few handmade fanning tips:

  • Use an easy fanning lash when you're learning or when your hands are tired late in the day.
  • Less pressure, more roll. Pressing too hard creates narrow, uneven fans. A gentle roll or slide opens the fan more naturally.
  • Keep a consistent base width. A neat, narrow base is lighter and bonds better.
  • Practice off the client. A lash tile or practice pad makes repetition easy.
  • Take care of your wrists. Stretch between clients and take real breaks. Your hands are your business.

Should beginners learn handmade fans first?

Honest answer: learning to hand-fan is worth it. It teaches you how spread, weight, and base width affect a fan, and that knowledge helps you choose better premade fans too.

But you don't need to master handmade before you offer volume. Many artists start with premade fans to build their clientele and income, then practice hand-fanning on their own time. Both paths lead to great lash artists.

Will clients know? Can you charge the same price?

Clients notice how their lashes look, feel, and last. They don't see how each fan was made, and they don't need to.

Price your services on the result, your skill, your experience, and your market, not on whether you fanned every lash by hand. If premade fans save you time, that time is yours to use: more appointments, shorter days, or simply more energy for the clients you already have.

A note from me

When we started Mega Lash Academy in 2021, it was from a basement, building one order at a time. I learned quickly that in a small business, your time is your most valuable inventory. You can't restock it.

That's why I care so much about the tools you choose. There's no single "right" way to lash. Some of you will hand-fan every set for the love of it. Some of you will go all in on premade fans and double your bookings. Most of you will land somewhere in the middle. All of those are valid.

What matters is that your work is beautiful, your clients leave happy, and you still have something left at the end of the day.
