How to remove eye makeup with lash extensions
Taking off eye makeup when you have lash extensions can feel like walking through a minefield. One wrong rub or product choice, and half your volume fan is lying on your cheek.
The good news? You don’t have to skip makeup altogether. You just need a routine that dissolves your shadow and liner without melting the glue holding your extensions in place.
Here is a straightforward, extension-safe way to get your eye area clean every single night.
2 Golden Rules Before You Start
-
Ditch oil-based products entirely. Oil breaks down cyanoacrylate (the chemical in lash glue). That means no cleansing oils, two-phase makeup removers, or coconut oil near your eyes.
-
Put away the cotton balls and pads. The tiny fibers snag on the base of your extensions, twisting them or pulling them out completely.
What You Need
-
An oil-free eye makeup remover or micellar water (check the bottle specifically for "oil-free").
-
A dedicated lash cleanser / lash shampoo.
-
A soft, flat eyeshadow brush or fluffy lash-cleaning brush (synthetic bristles work best).
-
A clean spoolie (mascara wand).
-
A microfiber cloth or paper towel.
Step-By-Step: How to Take It Off Safely

1. Remove Eyelid and Brow Makeup First
Start with your eyelids, brows, and skin around the eyes before touch your lash line.
-
Soak a lint-free wipe or tissue with your oil-free micellar water.
-
Gently wipe your eyelids, moving away from the base of your lashes (toward your brow).
-
Clean your eyebrows and under-eye area.
2. Dissolve Eyeliner with a Brush
If you wear eyeliner, don't try to rub it off with a cloth.
-
Dip a flat, soft eyeshadow brush into your oil-free remover.
-
Gently trace along your upper lash line, right above the extensions. Let the liquid loosen the liner.
-
Dab away the loosened makeup with a dry tissue.
3. Cleanse the Lash Line (Don't Skip This!)
Makeup, natural skin oil, and dead skin cells trap easily between your extensions. If you don't wash them properly, you risk getting blepharitis (an eye infection).
-
Pump one dab of lash shampoo onto the back of your clean hand or directly onto your eyelids.
-
Take your soft brush and gently work the foam down through your lashes in a downward sweeping motion (from lid to tip).
-
Never rub side-to-side or scrub in circles.
4. Rinse with Cool Water
-
Cup your hands with lukewarm or cool water and splash your eyes gently to rinse away the foam.
-
Avoid standing directly under a high-pressure shower head, as heavy water pressure can bend or knock off extensions.
5. Dry and Fluff
-
Pat your face dry with a towel, but avoid rubbing your eyes.
-
Lightly press a paper towel or lint-free microfiber cloth against your closed eyes to absorb excess water.
-
Let your lashes air dry for a few minutes.
-
Once they are completely dry, use a clean spoolie to gently brush them out from the middle of the lash to the tip. Never brush them while they are still wet, as wet glue bonds are slightly more vulnerable to twisting.
Quick Daily Tips to Make Extensions Last Longer
-
Switch to extension-safe liner: Avoid waterproof liners or gel pots. Use liquid liners with fine felt tips or powder shadows applied wet.
-
Skip mascara on extensions: You shouldn't need it anyway, but mascara is nearly impossible to wash out of volume fans without destroying them.
-
Wash them daily: Even on days you don't wear makeup, wash your lashes once a day with a lash shampoo to clean off natural facial oils.
