How to Use Lash Adhesive in Changing Weather

Apr 7, 2025

Lash artists know that lash adhesive is the heart of any lash extension application. But did you know that weather changes can significantly impact how your adhesive performs? Temperature, humidity, and even seasonal shifts can all affect drying time, retention, and overall application. Understanding how to use, store, and adjust for these changes will help ensure seamless applications and happy clients year-round.

How Weather Affects Lash Adhesive

Lash adhesives are cyanoacrylate-based, which means they cure (dry) with moisture in the air. This makes them highly sensitive to environmental changes, especially humidity and temperature. Here’s what happens:

  • High Humidity (Above 60%): The adhesive cures too quickly, leading to weak bonds, poor retention, and potential clumping.
  • Low Humidity (Below 40%): The adhesive dries too slowly, causing stickiness, retention issues, and extended appointment times.
  • Hot Temperatures (Above 75°F): The adhesive’s consistency may thin out, leading to dripping and difficulty in application.
  • Cold Temperatures (Below 65°F): The adhesive thickens and slows down curing time, leading to poor attachment and weak retention.

Adjusting Application for Weather Changes

Since you can’t control the weather, adapting your lashing technique is key. Here’s what you can do:

1. Control Your Environment

  • Use a Hygrometer: Measure humidity and temperature in your workspace to monitor fluctuations.
  • Invest in a Humidifier/Dehumidifier: This helps regulate moisture levels to maintain optimal conditions.
  • Adjust Ventilation: Air conditioning and heating can alter humidity, so balance airflow accordingly.

2. Choose the Right Lash Adhesive

  • Low Humidity (Below 40%): A faster-drying adhesive with high viscosity to your lashing speed is best to prevent premature curing and poor retention.

  • Moderate Humidity (40-60%): A versatile adhesive with a moderate drying time is ideal for stable performance.

  • High Humidity (Above 60%): Use a slower-drying adhesive to allow more time for curing. A medium to medium viscosity adhesive works best.

Proper Storage for Longer Adhesive Shelf Life

To keep your lash adhesive in its best condition, proper storage is crucial.

Do:

✔ Store in an airtight container with silica gel packs to absorb moisture.

✔ Keep at a consistent temperature (ideally 68-72°F).

✔ Place in a dark, cool space away from direct sunlight.

✔ Shake the bottle side to side well before use to mix ingredients properly.

Don’t:

✘ Store in the refrigerator once opened, as condensation can ruin the formula.

✘ Leave the adhesive uncapped for extended periods, as exposure to air can lead to premature curing.

✘ Place near heaters, windows, or fans, as extreme temperatures can alter consistency.

Weather changes can be a challenge for lash artists, but with the right knowledge and adjustments, you can maintain consistent, high-quality results. By monitoring your environment, choosing the right adhesive, and storing it properly, you’ll ensure great retention and flawless applications no matter the season.

Keep these tips in mind, and your lash adhesive will work for you, not against you!
